The time and place is the early 1930's in rural Alabama. The sheriff has been murdered by unknown assailants. James Earl was the third sheriff in succession from the same family. It will be the first time in sixty years, one of the Earl men will not be in charge of law and order. The man's only son is a teenager and after the funeral is told his family history through the eyes of an old mulatto, Ben Davis, who had been born into slavery and been involved with the family since he was six years old. It is a story of murder, moonshine, family feuds, romance, the Ku Klux Klan and rural prejudice. It is about one family in a difficult time and a hard place.

A great story. Interesting concept...the telling through the eyes of a freed slave is different. Though the character was"educated," by the owners, I felt some words used in the telling probably would have been different in that era. There were a few typo errors that would have not been caught except in the actual reading of the book. I wondered about the question/phrase, "you can't cut the mustard". Wondered there was actual mustard in that day in rural Alabama. Plus, I thought the actual word for that phrase was " muster?"' That said, I really was spellbound! Can't wait to read the sequel.Product details

Easy reading, lots of twist and turns
I was hooked from the start. Suspense, action, twists, true to life characters, romance, good guys, bad guys, revenge and justice. Everything you want in a novel. Sequel please!
Great story! Very good for a 1st book - looking forward to more!
An engrossing and heartfelt story. A real page turner.
This book was a pleasurable easy read from start to finish. The characters are full of life and the author brings you back to a time where the wall dividing blacks and whites was beginning to crack and crumble. This story reminds us that goodness prevails even in an era where so much pain and sin was dismissed so easily.
Great story, looking forward to the sequel.
Earls of Alabama is a great first novel from Larry Brown. For full disclosure, the author is my father.
The book covers a few generations of a family in post civil war Alabama up to the 1930s. The plot takes a bit to get established (about 30-40 pages). Once things get set up the story is off to the races with murder, relationships, chases, suspense, and good old fashioned feuds. Stay tuned for a number of twists and surprises throughout the novel. I would recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys historical/period fiction and a fast paced fun read.
